The Secret Lake (La Garenne)

This is a forest lake with depths of 1 metre to 2.5 metres. Most forest lakes were dug intentionally around this depth so they warmed up quicker, thus getting the food chain going earlier and therefore fish weights increasing at a faster rate. This lake was, in fact, a well known fish farmer’s lake, which we (Alan & John) have managed to purchase from the forest owner.

It is a very pretty lake, being surrounded by thick deciduous forest. The bank side is not restricted by tall trees but only low bushes which we will be keeping to around four to six feet. There are two islands favouring one side of the lake. Patches of oxygenating weed can be found (no curly pond weed). Grassy rush is on one side of the islands, we have cut gaps in this rush as one of the features to fish to. The forest behind is around ten yards at the rear of you at most times. The only man made noise you will hear is maybe a French Mig flying over a couple of times a week. As long as you don’t mind the croak of frogs, and birds singing, then this is the peaceful lake for you.

The wild life consists of two coots, two moorhens, only two coypus we hope, birds of prey, apparently wild boar and deer. And, of course, the usual insects.

The lake is called La Garenne in France but we though The Secret Lake would be an apt name given its position in the middle of a forest. It is located in a very large  forest, which is a few miles from Lac de Der (Chantecoq).

The lake contains some beautiful carp. There are fish to  forty, many thirties and around 65 twenties. There is an unknown amount of the fish farmer’s carp left in here. These are beautifully scaled mirrors and commons now close to if not over twenty.

We have erected a 16 square metre log cabin with patio deck, toilet, sink and shower for use during your stay.
